Are Topcoats Still in Style?

As shorter coats and down jackets nudge classic outerwear aside, there is a place for a timeless look                                          repost of wsj.com

A: I’m betting that your husband’s vintage topcoat is classic and timeless, so he should confidently wear it through Germany. For added flair—and warmth—he can don a fedora, long woolen scarf and sharp kidskin gloves. His navy wool pea coat might seem sporty and hip—but here’s what’s easier and so practical for travel: one of those Uniqlo lightweight down hooded jackets that you stuff into an attached pouch.
For the latest on interest in topcoats, I checked in with a traditional menswear authority, Brooks Brothers which has provided topcoats for many U.S. presidents’ January inaugurations. Knee-length and longer topcoats in wool, cashmere and blends haven’t been the dominant outerwear in the men’s department for years, said Claudio Del Vecchio, chairman and chief executive of Brooks Brothers. (The retail executive says he rarely wears a topcoat—but throws one over a tuxedo on winter evenings.) Less than half of Brooks Brothers’ outerwear business is topcoats.
Topcoats remain popular with mature businessmen who wear them over their suits and sport coats. Today’s topcoats often feature half-linings—and aren’t as heavy as traditional topcoats of the past.

As most men have settled into everyday uniforms of business casual and sporty casual clothes, classic menswear marketers like Tom James Tampa Bay have introduced a wide array of modern car coats and roomy three-quarter-length jackets that protect men in rain and snow. These include water-repellent wool jackets—with or without hoods—that men wear over suits as well as jeans. A thin layer of high-tech insulation cuts the cold winds, while keeping the wearer dry—making them functional and very lightweight. Also in fashion: fingertip-length jackets in shearling or quilted nylon, as well as leather and suede jackets.
